Hey Las Vegas, ready or not, here I come!

Brace yourselves people.  Im feeling very sarcastic today! Hee hee hee!

Well, Friday afternoon I get on a plane for my first trip to Vegas. And the longest plane ride of my life.

6 hours!!

Alone!!

Oy!!

Now, I am bringing my laptop so I will have something to amuse myself with (I hope).  I wish I could get on the internet during the flight but, no dice on Southwest.  I'm just really worried that I might get antsy or claustrophobic.  (Can somebody open a window? I need some air!).  I wish I had Samanthas powers on Bewitched.  One nose twitch and Id be there!  Hey, I can dream.

And Im a little scared about the airplane bathroom.  I have only used an airline bathroom once.  That was in 1990 on my way to Florida.  I try to avoid them at all costs.  But being on the plane for 6 hours.Im may be forced to use one.  Ick!  Its like a port-o-potty at 2000 feet!   I think Ill just cross my legs and not drink anything.

But on to the best part of Vegas!  I cant wait to see my friend Michelle!   And we will be seeing three Jo Dee Messina concerts in a row!!!  Woo hoo!!! Merry Christmas to me!!

And I really want to see the lion and tiger (no bears oh my!) habitats.  (I love animals!)  The King Tut exhibit looks interesting too.  Oh, I cant wait to get there!!!!

Of course I will be taking tons of concert photos to share with everyone when I get back.

So cross your fingers for me on Friday (and Monday when I return)!  Ill be taking the Dramamine before I get on the plane and praying to fall asleep.

Here I come Las Vegas!  Youd better watch out!

Ok, gotta go start packing.........................................................

Exciting News!

Well it has been a really interesting week already - and it's only Wesdnesday!

As most of you have probably heard, Jo Dee is expecting her first child!  I am so happy for her and her family.

Although this is really wonderful news,  this blog will be the only place it is mentioned on my site.  I am keeping my site strictly about the "business" side of Jo Dee's life.

But, if you read her interview with People Magazine, she is talking about making a video for the "Unmistakable" single.  This is also great news!

I'm hoping that with Curb not having a new Tim McGraw album to promote next year, that Jo Dee will get a lot more support from Curb with this single.  And talk of a video from them is a good sign.

She's just too darn cute, isn't she?!!

I really wish Curb would think about putting out the new single in January so it could be added to play lists prior to Valentines Day.  What a great hook that would be!
A love song from Jo Dee Messina just in time for the most romantic day of the year.......makes sense to me.

Things are looking good for 2009!

On another topic...

I found the following blog interesting and educational......a friend of mine in the music biz wrote this so I know for a fact it is definately not a bunch of hog wash.

What you read below is one reason why it is SO important to have a top charting hit prior to the release of Jo Dee's new album.

Record Label Economics
Thursday, Oct 2, 2008

So your ready to be a big star, huh? And it just makes sense that your gonna be a rich big star, right? And a major label deal will make all your dreams come true? Maybe, maybe not. Here is some basic, yet general, information for you.

A label will usually give an artist an advance to record an album. This is normally anywhere from $50,000-$350,000.  Once the record is made and sold then of course hopefully the money starts coming in. But before the artist receives ANY payments they must pay back recoupables. Recoupables are items deducted from the artist royalties to make up for expenses. It costs an average of $200,000 to record an album. You have recording costs. Producers fees (3-6%), Standard Free Goods (5-10% free promotional items).

Here is some basic math for you.

14% royalty -3% royalty for the producer fees
That leaves 11% paid to the artist
X $12.05 (wholesale price)
That makes $1.32 per unit sold
But then we need to take 10% out for the promotional items
So that leaves a grand total of $1.19 for each CD to the artist.

Additional Recoupables
The label may offer additional support. But this is also recoupable

Tour Support 100% recoupable
Independant Radio Promotion   50-100% recoupable
Video Production  50% recoupable

Let's look at what it really looks like when it's all put together.

$300,000  Total Recording Fund
+
$100,000 (50% of the video cost)
+
$50,000 (100% of tour support)
+
$100,000 (50% of Independent Radio Promotion)
=
$550,000 in total recoupables due to the label

IF your record goes gold

Record label math:

$12.05
x
11% (artist royalty)
=
$1.32 per unit sold
X
500,000 units sold
=
$660,000 (artists cut for records sold)
-
$550,000 (total recoupable due to the label)
=
$50,000 due to artist vs. $6 Million for the label

Now if the record does NOT go gold the defecit may be taken from future records. It depends on the contract.

A record must go at least gold in order to break even.

Interesting question.....

What's Ahead for Tim McGraw After Clash With Label?

(My opinion?   Run Tim! Run!!!!!)

Artist Charges Third Greatest Hits Release Is a Ploy to Extend Contract
Tim McGraw
Tim McGraw
Tim McGraw's complaint earlier this week that Curb Records released his third greatest hits album to extend the length of his recording contract raises the question of what McGraw may do once his current contract ends.

Will he renegotiate with Curb for better terms? (A long shot, given the escalating enmity that apparently exists between the two parties.) Seek another major label deal? Or possibly record on his own label, just as
Toby Keith has done with remarkable success?

Neither Curb chief Dennis Hannon nor McGraw's manager, Scott Siman, would talk directly to CMT.com on this matter. But Siman did delegate McGraw's publicist, Jessie Schmidt, to speak on his behalf, and Hannon responded to McGraw's charges in a prepared statement.

In a press release Schmidt issued Tuesday (Oct. 14), McGraw said he wanted to release the album of new music he had recorded this year but that Curb ignored his wishes and confused his fans by putting out the Greatest Hits 3 album. Confusion might arise, McGraw intimated, from the fact that Curb had released only one new studio album on him since his last hits collection.

Greatest Hits 3 debuted at No. 1 this week in Billboard with sales of just over 44,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan, the organization that monitors retail sales. While a No. 1 is a No. 1, the sales total was anemic for an artist of McGraw's stature.

Besides going against his wishes, McGraw complained that Curb prepared and released Greatest Hits 3 "without his involvement."

Here's what Curb had to say about the project:

"Curb Records' Executive V.P. and General Manager, Dennis Hannon indicated that he had numerous conversations with McGraw's representatives with respect to all aspects of the Greatest Hits 3 album. ... [W]e share Tim McGraw's disappointment with the first week's sales levels, and we acknowledge that unfortunately the week that this album was released was right at the peak of the collapse of the economic and finance markets. We are going to work hard to try to take the current single 'Let It Go' to No. 1 in hopes that the economic climate is improving and that sales will also improve."

In a phone interview with Schmidt , CMT.com pursued questions raised by this clash between McGraw and his label, beginning with whether or not McGraw's new album could have been ready to sell during the all-important holiday buying season.

"They [Curb Records] weren't in possession of the music," Schmidt said, "but Tim was just about done with recording it and was close to turning it in. ... Our goal throughout this year was always to have it out in the October-November window."

Schmidt said she didn't know how many albums McGraw owes Curb under his present contract but that the contract is for a certain number of albums and not for a fixed period of time.

The Greatest Hits 3 album has the effect of extending McGraw's contract with Curb, Schmidt explains. "They say they have the option to put this record out and that also gives them an option to not put out another album [of McGraw's] for an extended period of time because, obviously, you don't put records out on top of each other in the marketplace." She notes that McGraw's camp disagrees with this interpretation.

In 2006, McGraw and his longtime producer, Byron Gallimore, established StyleSonic Records, which initially released the soundtrack for Flicka, a movie in which McGraw starred. Schmidt says she doesn't know if McGraw might record for his own label if he should end his ties with Curb.

"I'm sure Tim and his manager, Scott, have discussed that, but I'm not privy to what those decisions are," she said.

This is not the first time McGraw and Curb have bumped heads over the timing of an album release. In 2000, McGraw wanted to put out a new studio album. Instead, the label came with his first greatest hits package. Thus, the album McGraw was hoping to release, Set This Circus Down, was held back until 2001. Both albums went No. 1.

In a 2003 interview for an article on McGraw that appeared in The Journal of Country Music, Curb Records owner Mike Curb downplayed the bad blood between the two parties. "Record companies and artists -- when they have a long relationship -- will disagree every once in awhile on a song or some small issue. ... But the [then] 12-year relationship that we've had has been phenomenal. I can think of a hundred things we've agreed on, and just very few things where we've ever disagreed."

It appears that discussions between McGraw and Curb are now carried on entirely by intermediaries rather than face to face. Asked if the two men ever discuss their differences directly, Schmidt said, "I would think probably not. ... But this particular situation that [McGraw] found himself in has not ever happened -- without any type of involvement in this project coming out. Tim definitely did voice his opinion [that] he did not want this greatest hits album, [that] he had this new music ready. I wouldn't say this has come to a boiling point. It's obviously not a very comfortable situation for anyone in either camp right now."

Leave it to Curb (aka "The Shelved Record Company")

Well, I'm sure most have you have heard about this but just in case......

I hate to say it but it IS nice to see someone else speak up about Curb's practices.  Glad to know that they are sharing and spreading "the love" with more than one act over there at Curb Records.

Tim McGraw upset by label's decision

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) Tim McGraw says his record label, Curb Records, released a greatest hits package of his songs against his wishes and without his involvement.

McGraw, 41, said in a statement Tuesday that he's been working on a new studio album for more than a year, playing some of the new songs on tour and wanted to release the CD this fall.

But instead, he said, Curb Records released the greatest hits collection his third overall and second since just 2006 last week to extend his recording contract term.

"I'm saddened and disappointed that my label chose to put out another hits album instead of new music," McGraw said. "I've only had one studio album since my last hits package. It has to be just as confusing to the fans as it is to me."

The singer said he had no involvement in the creation or presentation of the record, "Greatest Hits 3."

The 12-track disc includes McGraw hits going back to 1995 up to his current single, "Let It Go." It also includes two tracks not previously released on any of McGraw's albums: "Find Out Who Your Friends Are" with Tracy Lawrence and Kenny Chesney, and "Nine Lives" with the rock group Def Leppard.

"Sure I love the songs and I don't want to take anything away from all the creative people who were part of making those records. But the whole concept is an embarrassment to me as an artist.

"In the spirit of the election year, I would simply say to my fans 'I'm Tim McGraw and I don't approve their message,'" he said.

Curb Records Executive Vice President and General Manager Dennis Hannon said in a statement that he had several conversations with McGraw's representatives about all aspects of "Greatest Hits 3." He also said the CD is projected to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard Country chart this week, though he expressed concern that it was released "right at the peak of the collapse of the economic and finance markets."

"We are going to work hard to try to take the current single 'Let It Go' to number one in hopes that the economic climate is improving and that sales will also improve."

Nielsen SoundScan releases the previous week's sales figures on Wednesdays. Billboard uses the figures to calculate its country albums chart.

McGraw has been with Curb, an independent label, since his 1993 debut. Other artists on the roster include LeAnn Rimes, Jo Dee Messina and Rodney Atkins.

McGraw had a similar dispute with Curb Records in 2000 when he wanted release an album of new material, but the label instead put out his first greatest hits package in time for the holiday season.

On the Net:

The following is from http://www.nationalpost.com/arts/story.html?id=880369

The logic may be that, by releasing the hits album first, Curb indefinitely delays the release of any following album, thereby extending the singer's contract.

"You don't want to release records on top of one another," says Jessie Schmidt, McGraw's publicist, "so this will basically extend his contract."

Asked whether it's possible for the artist to break his contract with Curb, Schmidt said that it is, but it's highly unlikely that he will.

"Tim has been with Curb since the beginning of his career, since 1993," Scmidt says, "and to break a contract, it's just so much more involved, so no, I don't think he's looking to do that."

Normally, when it comes to releasing a record, the studio and the artist negotiate a date. In this case, however, the decision appears to have been unilateral.

"He disagreed, and they did it anyway," Schmidt says.

So the question remains: Are McGraw's fans supposed to support him financially by purchasing the hits album? Or should they boycott it and wait for the next one?

"That's hard to judge," says Schmidt. "Obviously, his fans are going to purchase it because they do love him, but he just wanted them to know that he didn't support this decision."

She adds that McGraw will not be doing any press or publicity for Greatest Hits 3.

But wait! There's more! I LOVE this person's take on the situation.  Couldn't have said it better myself.

Tim McGraw vs. His Record Label

By Hoppy Gilmore Oct 15th, 2008 Share: SHARETHIS.addEntry({ title: "Tim McGraw vs. His Record Label", url: "http://froggyweb.com/?p=993" }); ShareThis

Yesterday Tim McGraw released this statement to the press:

I am saddened and disappointed that my label chose to put out another hits album instead of new music. Ive only had one studio album since my last hits package. It has to be just as confusing to the fans as it is to me. I had no involvement in the creation or presentation of this record. Sure, I love the songs and I dont want to take anything away from all the creative people who were a part of making those records. But the whole concept is an embarrassment to me as an artist. In the spirit of an election year, I would simply say to my fans Im Tim McGraw, and I dont approve their message.

So Tims record label released this statement:

Executive V.P. and General Manager, Dennis Hannon indicated that he had numerous conversations with McGraws representatives with respect to all aspects of the Greatest Hits 3 album and the good news is that the album is anticipated to debut as the number one album on the Billboard chart. Nevertheless, we share Tim McGraws disappointment with the first weeks sales levels and we acknowledge that unfortunately the week that this album was released was right at the peak of the collapse of the economic and finance markets. We are going to work hard to try to take the current single Let It Go to number one in hopes that the economic climate is improving and that sales will also improve.

Why would his record label do such a thing?

Money.

Thats it. Money.

Tim McGraw makes his record label lots of money. And by putting out another Greatest Hits CD they are giving themselves another year with Tim. Hes ready to release new music. But if they sit on that music it gives them extra time to cash in on Tims success.

Sure, theres a couple new songs on the Greatest Hits package. Tims record label is banking on you to buy the CD so you can hear the new songs.

In fact, if you read his record labels response again you will notice that all they care about is the money:

[W]e share Tim McGraws disappointment with the first weeks sales levels and we acknowledge that unfortunately the week that this album was released was right at the peak of the collapse of the economic and finance markets. We are going to work hard to try to take the current single Let It Go to number one in hopes that the economic climate is improving and that sales will also improve.

Tim didnt mention anything about first weeks sales! He said it was unfair to his fans that he release another Greatest Hits package with only one CD out since the last Greatest Hits package!

Some Nashville record labels are forcing artists to do things that are detrimental to their craft. They need to spit out new CDs way too quickly. As soon as a CD comes out the artist has to start writing for the next CD. That results in ithe artists not getting the time to put out their best material. We (radio stations) arent given the time to play songs off their CDs that we believe would be hits. I cant tell you how many times I get calls from people asking me, Why didnt you play X song off of their CD? Why? Because were supposed to support their new CD.

I subscribe to a Quote of the Day service and todays quote couldnt be more fitting. Its from John Cleese (of Monty Python fame): If you want creative workers, give them enough time to play.

I hope someone from Nashville is reading this.

Release of next single!!!!!!!

Posted by unmistakablejodee on September 30, 2008 at 9:23 PM Comments comments (0)

Well, as you can see on the home page,  the next single from Jo Dee's album will be released in March 2009.  The single they are planning to release then is the title track, "Unmistakable".  This song is sooooooo amazing!

This is wonderful news!!!!   We still don't have an ACTUAL date and, as we know from experience this is still subject to change.   I don't know if our letters, phone calls and emails had any bearing on this decision and announcement but, I'd like to think so.

So, let's celebrate and keep your fingers crossed!

Our ongoing support of Jo Dee

We still need everyone to get as many people they can to sign the petition.  Even if we do not use it this year it may be needed after the new year, depending on how long it takes for Curb to release a new single (IF they do).

Right now it is just a waiting game.  But it really stinks because Jo Dee can not tell venues when the album is going to be released it is getting harder for her to book shows.  You will notice that the tour dates are dwindling on her site.  Venues know that an upcoming album release will boost concert ticket sales.  I don't know how she deals with all the ups and downs of the industry.  I would be a mess! lol

But everyone needs to keep their chin up.  What else can we do?  And don't forget to keep requesting "I'm Done" (even though it is not on the charts  ).  And if your station won't play that song request another Jo Dee song.   Keep her on the airwaves!

Responses to our Curb letters.............................

Hello everyone!  (And I mean BOTH of you - lol.  I'm kidding, I know there are three of you.)

Some of you who contacted Curb may have received an email (form letter) from Mr. Stuart Dill, Jo Dee's personal manager.  I was kinda impressed I must say.  I never thought I would hear from anyone.  It was nice to get a response.  Below is the email I received......

This is Stuart Dill, Jo Dee Messinas personal manager.  Thanks for being such a big supporter of Jo Dee.  Just so you know the information about Curb holding her release is incorrect.  Jo Dee, Curb and I are all in agreement that we need to wait and release the new album as soon as we have a national chart hitting single on country radio.  We are all working hard to make that happen.

Well, I do thank Mr. Dill for his response but, with all do respect ......I will have to believe and stick with what Jo Dee told me.  (Hope he understands.)

Now I know we will have to wait until next year for another single.  Now is just not the best time to release a single (holidays coming up, etc.......not the best time to try to be on the charts).  This is something I was informed of by someone in the industry.

I also realize that we will not see the album until there is a high charting single.  It's just not good for anyone if an album is released and no one (but the hard core fans like us) know it exists.  Let's face it, most people, even if they knew of it's release, would not go out and buy an album unless they were familiar with and liked a song on that album.

But, we will be watching...........come January 2nd.  We will be looking for that next single to drop soon after....  Rest assured, we will kindly remind Curb if needed.  We will not let Jo Dee fall through the cracks.

Unmistakable CD Shelved again!!!

Ok my friends, I have the dish on the status of the Unmistakable cd.

SHELVED - AGAIN!!!   Angry

I spoke with our favorite redhead last night at the concert in Woodstock, CT.  The news was devistating, as you well know. (here we go again....)
(IF or when they decide to release another single it will probably not be until next year and will be the title song "Unmistakable").

Well, this time last year we sent emails, letters, biker chick ornaments, made phone calls, etc.

WE NEED TO DO THIS ONCE AGAIN!!!  PLEASE JOIN ME IN SUPPORTING JO DEE AND LET'S GET UNMISTAKABLE RELEASED!!!

Please contact me through this website with any ideas you have and any action you take.  I will be keeping a list of all we do.   (PLEASE, NO HATEMAIL.  You'll be wasting your time, which would be better spent writing a nice, friendly letter to Curb  Smiley ).

Remember to keep your contact with Curb polite and respectful.
